How it Began

HOW THE FLEXIBLE PROGRAM BEGAN:

When we began teaching, I thought we needed to follow the other schools in the basic format, teaching two days a week with four-hour long classes, and have a weekend review.

Jim asked me, “why would we do that”? It didn’t make sense to him.

What did make sense was to offer a flexible program. We were going to offer the complete program at multiple locations across the state of New Hampshire but we weren’t going to dictate the students’ schedules–that they stay at one location and follow a fixed plan and fixed timeline for completing the course.

We wanted to offer something different and workable for the students. We launched and operated a program where students could come and go through the classes, in any order, at any location that we taught at.

We didn’t require attendence on any specfic day. As Jim said, “why take someone’s weekend from them to mandate they go to school? Weekends are for ‘me time.'”

Our flexible program was met with great resistence from the other schools and the New Hampshire Real Estate Commission. With our attorney at our side, we spent countless hours before the Commission, fighting for this new program.

Finally, it made sense to all and our flexible program was approved and, quickly, the other schools developed and implimented programs similiar to ours.

Our students were allowed to come and go through the course in any order, at any time and in any location that worked best for them and their schedule. No more weekend reviews! Instead, we offered that the student repeat classes on topics they wished to review as part of our program. This is where it began.

Books give you the foundation via academic map and theoretical knowledge. While applied knowledge is power and the journey learned from navigation on social dynamics, and problem solving through experience.

Both methods being crucial for comprehensive understanding, as books offer breadth/depth on demand, but experts provide context and tacit skills you can’t get from text. Books give you curated, foundational theory, broad knowledge synthesized information at your own pace, experts teach you the “how” and “why” through experience, handling real-world complexities,
emotional depth, deeper retention, lasting lessons, wisdom and unique situations.

We feel the best approach blends both using the book as a tool to build strategies for deeper, applicable understanding, rather than just memorizing content. Relying solely on textbooks can lead to information overload or shallow learning, whereas application-focused teaching, often using books as resources, moves beyond the text to build enduring competency and strategic thinking.
